Big Band Rehearsal The April 27th big band rehearsal was more than a memorable experience. The rehearsal was a huge honor for Ivy musicians who played for the first time with professional jazz musicians and in the presence of composer and arranger Tom Merriman. Mr. Merriman autographed some of musician's sheet music of his instrumental and vocal medleys and said, "It is amazing to hear them play." The band members seemed to be equally impressed with Ivy. The Ivy musicians poured full concentration into the rehearsal, and band members commented that the students "get it," referring to the music. "They understand swing!" Band members also commented on the well-organized rehearsal. The rehearsal ended with smiles and anticipation of the once-in-a-lifetime concert performance, "Rebirth of the Big Band." |

Celebration of the Dance The season opener, entitled "Celebration of the Dance," paid homage to the musical dance form, an integral part of the world around us. The orchestra opened with "Grand Valse" by Chopin and "Ballo Tedesco" by Boccherini. These waltzes demonstrated the elegant slow waltz in "Grand Valse" and celebrated the exciting and fast moving waltz in Boccherini's composition. The audience enjoyed the orchestra's recreation of a chandelier lit ballroom. The haunting and rhythmic beguine style delighted audiences with "Begin the Beguine." The professional dance team of Bob and Aleene performed a ballroom dance presentation of a waltz and the tango to open the second half. The second half of the program opened with William Still's "Cumbia and Congo" from Danzas de Panama, and instruments were used not only in their usual manner, but also as percussion instruments as the musicians tapped on their violins, violas, and cellos to copy the sound of drums and wooden sticks. The finale was "Tango Por Una Cabeza" by Carlos Giardin. Giardin's composition depicts a gambler who has lost everything in a horse race; instead of lamenting his loss, he celebrates life with this seductive and explosive Latin dance form. |
